Background
As the definition of what it means to be a man becomes ever more trivial, today's boys and young men are facing an increasing struggle trying to grow and mature into adulthood. The disintegration of traditional family units, weaker bonds between father and son, the decline of community support structures, rampant consumerism and the lure of drugs and alcohol have resulted in unprecedented challenges for many adolescent boys. In UK male suicide rates are one of the highest in the world, disaffection levels are at an all time high and boys are under performing at school.
As a charity, abandofbrothers believes that many long-term social problems can be alleviated if young men are provided with appropriate support and attention. Community is most ruptured between generations of males.
At the time when many youngmen can lose their bearings, abandofbrothers exists to support young men and their families through the difficult transition into manhood.
Through its activities, abandofbrothers aims to:
· Assist young men in making a healthy transition to adult manhood so that they emerge purposeful, inspired and confident in their
own skills and abilities.
· Create elders, mentors and support networks that young men can call upon in times of need.
· Encourage closer interactions between young men, their fathers and other positive male role-models and also with other members of their family and community.
· Raise community awareness around the vital importance rites of passage and encourage open dialogue on issues affecting young men.
abandofbrothers facilitators have been developing and delivering “Rite of Passage” programmes in schools and communities around UK since 1992.
